SOME IDEAS FOR MINI-ENTERPRISE

Some of the following could be embedded into certain curriculum areas.

The customers could be from within the school (both staff and students) and some things could also be sold to the local community or even local shops.

  • customised jeans service
  • shoe cleaning service
  • handmade birthday cards/Christmas cards etc
  • a backing books service in different designs
  • cleaners (some schools employ and pay the 6th formers to do this)
  • arrange a car-boot sale at the school
  • arrange fund-raising events for the school i.e., disco – pupils to do this
  • look at running a franchise of a current business based in the school
  • run a coffee shop for staff and 6th formers – like Friends – maybe even link in with a coffee shop to have a branch in the school.
  • run a stationery shop – pens, pencils etc (determine what the pupils’ needs are) pupils could carry out market research and source products
  • run an auction type shop like e-bay – people bring things in to sell and the pupils charge a commission on the sale
  • re-cycling – pupils could link in with a re-cycling company
  • corporate poetry – English Faculty could look at producing this with pupils
  • take commissions for art/craft work from local companies and either sell it to them or rent it to them
  • IT website design for local companies
  • recording a special piece of music for an event at school or within the community etc
  • put on a fashion show with local companies supplying the clothes/jewellery etc. The pupils could organise all aspects of this. Could be an annual event
  • design letter-headed paper/business cards for local companies/individuals
  • arrange a sports day for staff of local businesses – 5-a-side football etc to be held at the school. Could link in with local professional clubs.
  • organise a business challenge (a little like the generation game – get the businesses to put up teams and to compete in games like the generation game model. Get a local personality to host this. The teams pay to enter and a cup could be given at the end. This could become an annual event organised and hosted by the school
  • the school could run the BTEC Level 2 course on setting up your own business for the local community.
  • look at ways the local community could use the school – i.e., coffee mornings, WI meetings, parent and toddler groups etc
  • run a charity shop on the school premises – for cool clothes (could also be customised). Could link in with a charity shop to do this too
  • pupils to organise a talent contest like Pop Idol – could also involve parents/teachers
  • pupils to organise a senior citizen treat day
  • pupils to organise school concerts and plays
  • pupils to organise a comedy show etc
